18 December: International Migrants Day

Dianova International joins the NGO Committee on Migration in New York

In occasion of the International Migrant’s Day we are proud to share that Dianova International has been recently welcomed and will be joining the New York NGO Committee on Migration (COM) as of 2016. The COM belong to the Conference of Non Governmental Organizations in consultative relationship with the United Nations (CoNGO). The mission of the NGO Committee on Migration is to encourage the protection and promotion of migrants’ human rights, in accordance with the United Nations Charter.

Given the emerging importance of the migration issue globally and the close tie with human rights, Dianova International joins the efforts of like-minded NGO partners to echo the message from theOffice of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights supporting the joint campaign Migrant Rights, an initiative of the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the human rights of migrants, together with the International Detention Coalition. The campaign and website (http://talkmigrantrights.org/) will be a platform for migrants, migrants’ rights advocates, human rights experts, and practitioners from around the world to share their support for migrants' rights.

As United Nations Special Rapporteur on the human rights of migrants, Mr. Francois Crépeau, has stated in his welcoming video (http://talkmigrantrights.org/), “Migrants are people. Just like you and me, they also have rights. Our common human rights regime applies to them as much as it applies to us. Actually, there are no “Us” and “Them”. It’s all “We".

For whose who want to contribute, it is possible to share photos, infographics, videos, reports, etc. using the #MigrantRights hashtag to draw attention to issues that are important to you.

Furthermore, today, 18 December at 3pm Central European Time, a one-hour global webinar  event  titled Migration-tackling the challenges of border control and human rights, will be hosted by the Special Rapporteur on the human rights of migrants along with leading figures from around the world. It will provide an opportunity to hear from experts discussing their work and also to submit questions and comments to the Special Rapporteur and panelists.

the Committee on Migration is very active in securing a meaningful contribution of civil society to the Global Forum on Migration and Development. The Forum is an initiative of the United Nations member states to address the migration and development interconnections in practical and action-oriented ways.

It is an informal, non-binding, voluntary and government-led process and reflects the progressive acknowledgement of the limits of a strictly national approach to migration questions and implications at global level in an intergovernmental framework. Civil society have been involved in this process from the beginning and are among the stakeholder of the forum. The ninth edition is expected to take place in Dhaka in December 2016 under the leadership of Bangladesh. More information are available on this page
