17 March, Dianova will participate in an event parallel to the 59th session of the United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs, in Vienna
Dianova is for the fifth consecutive year participating in a parallel event coinciding with the 59th annual session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND59). The title of this event is “Addiction Treatment in Southern Europe: Providing Solutions in Times of Crisis.” Event organizers have invited national and International representatives of the CND and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), as well as representatives of NGOs that deal with addiction.
This parallel event will feature representatives from three organizations that specialize in treatment: KETHEA (Greece), Asociación Proyecto Hombre (Spain) and Dianova International. These representatives will focus the impact of the crisis on drug-related problems in Slovenia, Spain, Greece, Italy, and Portugal. Panelists will also discuss risks and challenges that new needs create for treatment and for drug policy strategies.
The timing of all these events CND59 and the parallel session is historic. The United Nations General Assembly will hold a Special Session (UNGASS) addressing the global drug problem from April 19-21, 2016. CND59 is thus the most important event leading up to this Special Session, and will feature a special session on UNGASS preparations.

The parallel session also has a potentially great impact on policy. It will take place in the same site as the UNGASS, where member states will participate in discussions focusing on the global drug consumption and control situation.
Elena Goti will present Dianova International’s message: “
We are greatly concerned by the diminished capacity of the various social welfare systems in our countries. We also worry about the risk that public policy will view third sector as a low-cost safety net. Even worse is the prospect of recreating private sponsorship systems. Such systems could partially or totally replace political and social commitment to maintain a social safety net based on citizens’ rights.”
This event will take place on Thursday, 17 March from 9 to 9:50 a.m. in the MOE79 Conference Room of the Vienna International Center, Vienna (Austria). We hope to see you there!
