Commission on the Status of Women CSW62 – 2018

As an ECOSOC-accredited NGO, Dianova will attend the sixty-second session of the CSW in New York City from 12 to 23 March and participate in various side events

CSW62

Challenges and opportunities in achieving gender equality and the empowerment of rural women and girls

The CSW is a global policy-making body dedicated exclusively to promoting gender equality and the empowerment of women in political, economic, civil, social and educational fields. The Commission also contributes to the follow-up of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development so as to accelerate the above-mentioned objectives.

Every year, representatives of Member States, United Nations entities and non-governmental organizations in consultative status with ECOSOC gather at UN Headquarters in NYC for a 10-day annual session. The 62nd session of CSW will take place from 12 to 23 March and will address as its priority theme ‘Challenges and opportunities in achieving gender equality and the empowerment of rural women and girls’.

NGO Participation and Side and Parallel Events

The participation of NGOs is considered a critical element in the work of the Commission. Not only have they been influential in shaping the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (the current global policy framework on women’s empowerment and gender equality) but they also continue to play a crucial role in holding international leaders accountable for their commitments.

The programme of side events, i.e. activities organized outside the formal programme of the session, provides an opportunity for Member States, UN entities and NGOs to discuss themes of the Commission and other gender equality issues. In addition, NGOs may organize parallel event outside of UN premises under the coordination of the NGO Committee on the Status of Women (NGO CSW/NY), of which Dianova is a member.
