UN Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson

Dianova presents its program for women with dependent children (Chile) during civil society informal hearing at UN headquarters

The General Assembly of the United Nations opened its sixty-ninth meeting session on September 2014. During this session which is  to last about four months, the assembly dealt with a variety of international issues that range from economic growth to peace maintenance and the promotion of international right. Another aspect addressed by the Assembly was the international control on drugs, on October 9t to 10 in New York.

In this context, the Vienna NGO Committee (VNGOC) organized an informal Civil Society Hearing on October 10th. The main focus of this meeting was to strengthen the civil society platform, in the objective of the UN General Assembly Special Session on Drugs – UNGASS, to be hold in 2016.

The UNGASS will be the highest-level encounter (it will be attended by Heads of State and Government of all member states) on the issue of drugs. It will define the political priorities for the upcoming decade. Given the important consequences that this meeting will carry, it is key that the civil society organizes itself to have an impact on this debate.

“Addressing Drug Use together through a Health Based Approach as part of the International Drug Control Conventions” was the title of the informal hearing that revolved around a number of experiences in the Americas. The session featured a high-level opening panel, as it counted with the participation of Deputy Secretary General of the UN, Jan Eliasson, the Executive Director of UNODC, Yury Fedotov; and the Chairman of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs, Ambassador Khaled Shamaa.

The experts’ debate which followed the hearing was based on the experiences of six grass-root civil society organizations of the Americas. Elena Goti from Dianova International presented Dianova Chile´s program ¨Women with dependent children, Added value of residential treatment¨. The event was e broadcasted online on October 10 at http://webtv.un.org, from 19:15 to 20:45 (European Time)
