Gearing up: 60th session of the CND!

The 60th session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs will be the first high-level meeting following the adoption of the UNGASS resolution in April 2016

Office of the United Nations in Vienna

The Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) was established by the Economic and Social Council in 1946 to assist in monitoring the implementation of international drug control treaties.

The CND holds an annual meeting in March at the headquarters of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime in Vienna, Austria. It brings together representatives of national delegations working on the issue of drugs around the world as well as members of other international agencies, both inside and outside of the United Nations’ sphere, representatives of the scientific community, and an increasing number of civil society actors.

The CND60 will take place March 13-17, 2017. The starting point of this session is the UNGASS resolution signed last year, a milestone in the field of drug policy, that established “Our joint commitment to effectively address and counter the world drug problem“.

At the CND60, it is expected that countries will be accountable for their commitment and future work in implementing the resolution. In addition, a discussion will be held regarding the next key meeting on drug policy, scheduled for 2019, in which the Political Declaration and Action Plan, approved in 2009, will be reviewed and, consequently, the work carried out over the last decade is to be evaluated.
