UN-Women Now Launched

The United Nations have launched a new entity dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women. In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly approved the creation of a new UN entity dedicated to promoting and coordinating global efforts towards gender equality and women empowerment. Dianova representative, Mrs. Elena Goti was officially invited to celebrate the entity’s official launch at UN headquarters in New York city, on February, 24

New York, 24 February 2011 – The United Nations celebrated the historic launch of its newest entity, UN WOMEN, with an evening including various personalities from the worlds of politics, the media, business, education and entertainment. The United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women combines four previous UN bodies which were exclusively dedicated to those critical issues. According to UN officials, “It represents the United Nations’ most ambitious effort ever to accelerate actions to achieve gender equality”.

True gender equality should be our shared legacy in the 21st Century”.

Mr. Ban Ki Moon appointed Mrs. Michelle Bachelet to be the first Executive Director of UN Women. Mrs. Bachelet is a well-known personality of Dianova: former president of the Republic of Chile, she provided our organization with ongoing support during her four year mandate, in particular when she visited our therapeutic facility in San Bernardo in June 2007. Mrs. Bachelet was also appointed Vice-Executive Secretary of the United Nations.

Mrs. Bachelet called the launch the first of many important milestones in the global pursuit of gender equality; she also emphasized that the decision to establish UN Women reflected ongoing frustration with the slow pace of change.

«Think of how much more we can do once women are fully empowered as active agents of change and progress within their societies,” Ms. Bachelet says. “Historically, we are at a point of great potential and change for women. Now we must seize that opportunity. »

Mrs. Bachelet and Mr. Ban Ki-MoonUN Women will help and support individual countries in achieving gender equality and ending the worldwide phenomenon of violence against women. It will assist in setting global standards for progress and lead UN efforts to make new opportunities for women and girls central to all United Nations’ programs for peace and development.

The cause of women has always been one of Dianova’s most critical commitment, not only through acts of militants, but also in its own structures, whether in staff or management bodies, where gender equality has become a reality since many years. This is why the Dianova network fully supports UN Women objectives and wishes to join all efforts to be undertaken in this direction, to the extent of its means.

Dianova and Gender Equality (Exerpt from the Dianova Manifesto)

Equality between men and women is one of the fundamental principles of the United Nations Charter, of all international conventions, of all European treaties, and the majority of national constitutions.

However, for a variety of reasons having social, economic, cultural and political bases, the mere formal declaration of equality between men and women is not sufficient to guarantee its occurring in actual practice. In reality, illegal discrimination persists, with more or less intensity depending on the countries involved, in political representation, access to decision-making authority, salary levels, access to diversified employment etc.

Dianova supports regulatory action aimed at eliminating all direct and indirect manifestations of gender discrimination, promoting real equality between men and women and removing the obstacles that prevent this level of fairness from being achieved.

Dianova is committed to working for equal opportunities for all people, regardless of their gender, race, religion or age, in all of its areas of influence, both internal and external.
The incorporation of equality and diversity throughout the organization encourages an integrative management strategy involving all employees.

Dianova’s ethical commitment to equality entails the development of a positive action plan for its personnel that places special emphasis on all actions that foster the highest level of personal growth.

Dianova is committed to putting in place practices that integrate the vision of equality and diversity in whichever intervention it implements, with the aim of providing each person with the appropriate care.
