Dianova reports to UNESCO’s ‘Women Make the News’ initiative to promote gender equality

Women Make the News 2017This month Dianova International wished to report to the UNESCO’s initiative, Women Make the News 2017, presenting the main efforts and commitments to gender equality the organization has undertaken in the last months and for the near future. The project is aimed at highlighting the key role of the media in promoting gender equality and in achieving the objectives of the Beijing Declaration and Platform of Action and of Goal 5 of the Sustainable Development Goals. Women Make the News 2017 also encourages those working with the media, the private sector, civil society organizations and the community as a whole to conduct a Gender Equality Checkup this year, to help identify what we can all do better to effectively advance the status of women and to contribute with the goals of equality for all.

Dianova International Reports to ‘Women Make the News 2017’ initiative

“Dianova International is firmly committed to taking progressive steps towards achieving gender equality in its programs and within its organizational structure. Last year Dianova proudly achieved gender parity in the composition of its Assembly Council. In the sequence, this year Dianova is revisiting issues that affect the core of its policies and it has given special attention to deepen the discussions and commitments on women’s empowerment and gender equality, as will be reflected in the Dianova Network’s Manifesto, a document that will be available after its approval by the Assembly of Delegates.

Particularly for this International Women’s Day, Dianova supported the feminist call for action within the Women’s Strike movement in the fight to end the culture of inequality and discrimination that places women in constant vulnerability and disadvantage in their private and public lives. At the same time, Dianova is continually engaged in advocacy for gender equality through its active participation at the NGO Committee on the Status of Women (NGO CSW).  This year, aside from taking part at the Planning Committee of the NGO CSW Forum, Dianova has co-organized 5 events during the 61st session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW61), helping to build bridges for women’s economic empowerment and putting the spotlight on the special needs and particular vulnerabilities of migrant women.

Additionally, through our social media outlets on Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn, Dianova strongly advocates for gender equality and for women’s empowerment: among other actions, we create original images with thought-provoking messages launched on the occasion of World Women’s Day and other celebratory dates; we consistently spread the word about initiatives that promote gender equality; and last year Dianova also joined the UN Women “Orange the World” campaign during 16 days of activism against gender-based violence, producing daily original content on our website and social media.
