What We Do

United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC)

The UNODC is a global leader in the fight against illicit drugs and international crime. The UNODC work program includes: cooperation projects to enhance the capacity of Member States to combat illicit trafficking and drug abuse, research and analytical work to expand the evidence base for policy making, assistance to Member States to help them harmonize their legislations in accordance with drug or crime-related international treaties. In 2010, Dianova joined the “Global Sports Youth” a UNODC-led project to promote sports activities as an instrument to prevent drug abuse.

Civil Society Forum (CSF) on drugs

The CSF was implemented in 2011 by the European Commission and comprises 45 member organizations whose common objective is to feed grass-roots experience into Commission proposals and to contribute to the implementation and monitoring of EU drug policies. Dianova has been a member of the CSF since 2013; as such, the organization participates in the following work groups: “Institutional relationships with the EU and international agencies” and “Participation of civil society in national drug policies”.

Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission (CICAD)

CICAD has the mission to enhance the human and institutional capacities of its member states to reduce the production, trafficking and use of illegal drugs, and to address the health, social and criminal consequences of drug trade. Dianova participates as an observer in the CICAD’s meetings on a regular basis, as in Asunción del Paraguay, Costa Rica, Montevideo, etc.

CICAD belongs to the Organization of American States (OAS), wich constitues the main political, juridical and social governmental forum which gathers the 35 independant states of the Americas. Dianova has been recognized as a civil society partner by the OAS.

Commission of Narcotic Drugs (CND)

The CND is one of the nine functional commissions of the ECOSOC and is dedicated to supervising the application of drug control treaties. The CND develops strategies and measures to combat the world drug problem, while supervising the greatest part of the budget assigned to drug control activities at the UN. The decisions of the CND are taken by consensus of all member states. Dianova participates in the CND sessions on a yearly basis, and during several of these sessions, the organization has organized parallel events and made written statements.

Commission on the Status of the Women

The Commission on the Status of the Women (CSW) is a functional commission of ECOSOC; it is the principal body dedicated to gender equality and the advancement of women. Every year, representatives of Member States gather to evaluate progress, identify challenges, set global standards and formulate policies to promote gender equality and the empowerment of women worldwide.

Gender equality and women’s rights are considered to be cross-cutting policy areas in the Dianova network which, for many years, has been engaged in education, social and healthcare development in this respect. Dianova representatives participate in the CSW annual session as an observer where they can prepare written statements to be communicated to participants. In addition, Dianova has been presenting parallel events together with partner NGOs on the occasion of each CSW meetings since 2013.

Relationships with UNESCO

In Chile, Dianova is registered by the Ministry of Education as an organization specializing in educational services (ATE Registry) and has an accreditation from the government to provide educational and training services. The actions of Dianova Chile are oriented towards working with vulnerable populations and those living in poverty in municipal schools.

The Esther Del Rio-Las Marías education center formerly managed by Dianova Nicaragua was certified as an associated school to UNESCO’s Associated Schools Project Network (ASPnet); as such, the Dianova school participated in a reforestation project implemented by UNESCO in Nicaragua in 2010.
